St. Andrew Apostle Society

St. Andrew Apostle Society

In 1900, Italian immigrants to New Haven from Amalfi formed the St. Andrew the Apostle Society, named after Amalfi’s patron saint. St. Andrew the Apostle’s tomb is in the Amalfi Cathedral. The society provided members with a mutual aid program to cover the misfortunes of illness and death, and broadened to include civic and community responsibility. June 27th is celebrated as the miracle of Sant’Andrea Apostolo, where his remains were miraculously saved from Turkish invaders on June 27, 1544. The St. Andrew Society hosts their annual Festa each year in New Haven around this date on the society’s club grounds.
